SEVESO
En 1976, l’usine chimique ICMESA située à Meda, près de Milan explose et laisse échapper un nuage de Dioxine contaminant 4 communes alentours, dont la ville de Seveso. La population est évacuée, une partie de la ville démolie et les déchets toxiques enterrés sur place et sur lesquels sera replanté un parc forestier. Plus de quarante ans après, on distingue toujours sous les frondaisons de légères pentes, trois buttes correspondant aux différents sites d’enfouissement des déchets. Par la suite, une classification européenne de ce type d’usine à haut risque à été créée.
In 1976, an explosion at the ICMESA chemical factory in Meda, a suburb of Milan, caused a dioxin cloud that contaminated four surrounding municipalities, including the city of Seveso. The population of Seveso was evacuated and a part of the city demolished. The resulting toxic waste was buried on site and the area replanted as a forest park. More than forty years later, under the foliage in the forest, an observer can notice three large mounds corresponding to the different landfill sites. Subsequently, a European classification of this type of high-risk factory was created.
